Hannah Bernier signed her Letter of Intent to play softball for Southwest Minnesota State University on Wednesday, Nov. 8. Hannah is an ExCel Award Winner, two-year National Honor Society Member, Academic All State for Tennis, five-time Academic All Conference (tennis and Softball), two-year varsity letter winner for tennis, four-year varsity letter winner for softball, All Conference Honorable Mention for softball, two-time All Section Softball, a state participant, defensive MVP, two-time All Conference, and All State Honorable Mention. Said coach Kathy Crudo, “Hannah is never satisfied with just doing the minimum or what everyone else is doing. She works herself to the max to create a new max and isn’t afraid to ever be in game winning or losing situations due to her preparation. Hannah is the kid that wants the ball in her hands no matter what.”

Thanks to a grant from the North Branch Area Education Foundation (NBAEF), Sunrise welcomed speaker Tou Ger Xiong today to speak with students. With great humor and energy, Tou talked about coming to America from Laos as a child and how much different life in Minnesota was compared to his home country. Thanks Tou and thanks NBAEF!

NBAHS Air Force JROTC hosted its second annual Viking Challenge Drill Competition last week, including five other JROTC programs in the state. Teams compete against each other in a variety of skills, including inspection, color guard, drone flying, and more. First place overall went to Harding High School and second place overall went to Como Park High School. Results for NBAHS are as follows: Overall Champion - 3rd place Inspection - 2nd place Exhibition Drill - 2nd place Varsity Color Guard - 3rd place Academic Bowl - 2nd place 1st Year Color Guard - 3rd place Drone Overall Champion - 1st place Drone Individual Team - 1st and 2nd place

Viking state football ticket and send off info here! The Vikings will play Benilde-St. Margaret on Thursday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. at Monticello High School. Tickets can already be purchased from the Minnesota State High School League at https://mshsl.hometownticketing.com/embed/event/358. Tickets can also be purchased onsite but only through the MSHSL online source. The MSHSL does not offer cash sales. Prices are $9/students and $13/adults. The team will be escorted out of town by NBPD/NBFD around 3:30-4pm on Thursday, Nov. 9. If you are around please join the Grand to 95 to 35 route to see them off!

2nd grade students headed to the Oliver Kelley Farm last week to experience what life was like on a farm long ago. Students were able to participate in many activities to learn how farmers prepared for winter. Students learned about dual purpose animals. They helped make sauerkraut, visited the root cellar, helped care for the oxen and even shelled peas. What a fun experience for all! PUBLIC IS WELCOME: The Viking Challenge drill competition, hosted by the North Branch Area High School Air Force Junior ROTC program, will be held at NBAHS this Friday, Nov. 3, from 10 AM until approximately 3 PM. Cadet leaders have organized the competition and will be taking the lead role in running the event. The competition will be an opportunity for the cadets to showcase their skills in military drill as well as their academic knowledge and physical fitness. In addition, this year a drone race competition has been added to the event. Trophies and medals will be awarded to superior performing teams and individuals. Other participating schools include Como Park H.S.,Johnson H.S., Harding H.S., St. Thomas Academy and Cretin-Derham Hall. This event is open to the public. Please enter the high school through doors 5 or 11. Visitors will be directed to the event venues.

Recently, elementary student Ogima binese was honored as Student of the Week in his class. At show and tell that Friday he performed a hoop dance exhibition for his class. Ogima binese may be the first NBAPS student to perform hoop dancing!  He will be part of the Drum and Dance event at the Winter Solstice Storytelling, Drum, & Dance Night on Monday, Dec. 4, 4:30 - 7:30 p.m. at the North Branch Area Education Center. Skol! and congratulations to North Branch Area High School junior James Halverson! He made the USA National Cycling team. He will be heading to Europe November 14 to race in France and Ireland for Team USA on the Elite Jr. Men 17-18 team. He will be racing in two World Cup Elite Jr races, one in France, and the other in Ireland. This is the 6th season for James on Minnesota Junior Cycling. Coaches Dag Selander and Bjorn Selander have made a huge impact on him, they have an ability to push him, challenge him, and encourage him along the way. Good luck in Europe James!!!

Last week, students at the Chisago County Schools’ Life Work Center worked on problem solving and teamwork skills by trying to figure out if their teacher had turned into a zombie. There is no word on the result of the investigation. ;)
